Reflecting on CounterPunch’s “The Good Americans”: An Untold Summary of Everything Wrong with the United States Empire

If I had to pick one of the best pieces of writing I ever read on the internet that satirically summarizes everything historically wrong with the United States empire from start to finish, it would be CJ Hopkins’ “The Good Americans” from CounterPunch. It perfectly exposes all the sins of the country that its own citizens know little about. The following is a list of quotes from the source that struck me as worthwhile reading for all to reflect on:

The United States of America being a profoundly authoritarian society (whose citizens have been conditioned from childhood to follow orders, go through channels, submit to a host of humiliating rituals devised by an ever-expanding range of government and private “security services,” and to worship leaders, police, soldiers, and, basically, anyone wearing a uniform, or a Giorgio Armani business suit), this ruling class soft coup is cause for celebration.

This is unfortunately true of most children growing up in the United States. One would think back to a civilization wiped out in the same land by Columbus’ men where the same children were encouraged to think for themselves, and do not submit to any authority. Today, some of the best educational systems in civilized countries like Finland do a better job enlightening children, and focus on what makes them happy. Unfortunately, children in the United States are instead conditioned with punishment inspired by a culture of mass incarceration. From detention after school hours to handcuffs due to minor offenses like dress codes and tardiness.

A culture of fear is really what forces children to follow orders. Any natural signs of resistance to authority leads to an unnecessary and dehumanizing punishment. This capital punishment culture is not only found in schools, but in our prison system, the militarized police, and all the military branches. Sure, we celebrate and applaud the highest ranks in positions of authority, but what exposes this country as an authoritarian society is when one looks at how these same authority figures punish the oppressed whether it’s imprisonment due to civil disobedience or sending a lower rank to Captain’s Mast due to an inaccurately exaggerated report by a higher rank where the victim has little power or opportunity to challenge the report.

At which point they, these Good Americans, will pour en masse onto Lafayette Square, hooting, hollering, and waving flags, as they did when Obama sent Seal Team Six to roust the former CIA asset, Osama bin Laden, out of bed, shoot him several times in the face, and then dump his body in the Indian Ocean, or whatever it was that actually happened.

Americans seem to enjoy war, violence, and the killing of any human being as long as they are labeled the bad guy. As always, Hopkins is stating one fact after another. The United States has been utilizing this CIA asset strategy for decades in other countries that prove an inconvenience to corporate capitalists in power of this country. Not the President of the United States. Hopkins ends with a strong skeptic’s conclusion on what really happened to Osama bin Laden. History repeats itself. The corporate media in servitude of the United States government has lied to the American people before. The assassination of JFK and 9/11 come to mind.

What with all the demands of work, family, Facebook, Twitter, yoga, shopping, keeping up-to-date with the latest dining trends, not to mention the new season of House of Cards, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to scrutinize everything their leaders are doing, or the “information” the media is feeding them.

True. And what sources of media dominate our lives? The corporate media. CNN. MSNBC. Fox News. Whatever happened to real investigative journalism? The American people need a media that reports facts. Imagine having The Young Turks, The Jimmy Dore Show, Secular Talk, The Real News Network, CounterPunch, Truthout, and Truthdig dominate the media instead. We need more progressive voices to inform the American people, or there will be no democracy. The good news is that progressive ideals have been growing ever since the Trump administration took over. The same list of progressive media organizations I just named are growing more popular in social media.

The United States isn’t Nazi Germany. OK, sure, we wiped out the Native Americans (and sadistically named some of our sports teams after them), but that was hundreds of years ago. The same goes for slavery … ancient history. And, alright, so the United States, and the indigenous death squads we have trained and funded, have murdered millions of men, women, and children in places like Indochina, Indonesia, Central America, South America, and the Middle East, and we’ve bombed and invaded a long list of countries that posed no threat to us whatsoever purely to advance the interests of the corporations that own the government, and their ongoing quest for global hegemony … still, it’s not like Nazi Germany, where people went blithely on with their lives, pretending they had no idea what was happening.

Yes, Christopher Columbus and his men have committed genocide on one of the most peaceful civilizations of that century. The United States government has armed, funded, and trained terrorist organizations like Al-Qaida. Worst of all, we do the same thing for countries that expand terrorist organizations like Saudi Arabia. We are allied with a country that may have a connection with the 9/11 attacks. The United States military is under misleading orders of propaganda, but the objective is clearly to occupy and invade any country that poses a threat to corporate world domination. In other words, any country that is about to show signs of economic and democratic independence will be bombed. Countries like Iran and Libya come to mind. Hopkins points out that a lot of the American people have no idea what is going on with their country. There is a lack of anti-war resistance. This is nobody’s fault. Resistance still exists. The struggle between rich and poor is still going on. Corporate media is too powerful. There’s a lack of anti-war voices in the mainstream.

Coincidentally, a lot of these bad guys, in addition to being hideously evil, have been, circa the time of their removal, interfering with the vital interests of the corporations that own our government. Bashar al-Assad, Muammar Gaddafi, and Saddam Hussein are the most recent examples, but we’ve been doing this since the late 1940s. A partial list of CIA ops, including assassinations, torture, election rigging, coups, and so on, stretching back to the post-WWII period, when we re-installed fascists in Greece and Italy and smuggled Nazis like Reinhard Gehlen, Klaus Barbie (a/k/a “the Butcher of Lyon”), and Eichmann’s good buddy, Otto von Bolschwing to America to help us defeat “the Communists,” is available for perusal online, and in any number of books and articles. It’s not like this stuff is secret or anything.

The corporations that own our government have committed global crimes like rigging elections of other countries, replacing democratically-elected leaders with fascists, and assassinating revolutionaries like Muammar Gaddafi. Yet, here we are lying to the American public with constant propaganda that other foreign countries are rigging our election system, and that Bashar al-Assad attacking his own people authorizes our military to kill innocent lives. All these same lies have also led to killing of a million innocent lives in Iraq thanks to the Bush administration. Bush’s father led the attack in Panama that killed many innocent lives and infrastructure.

But whatever … no government is perfect, right? And Good Americans are grown-ups, after all. So they understand that all that crap about democracy is important to teach the children, and to put on the masthead of your newspaper, or whatever, but the real world doesn’t work like that. In the real world, where the Good Americans live, safely insulated from the abject poverty they are not in any way responsible for, sometimes you have to hire a few Nazis, or support a couple of fascist regimes, or sell a few buttloads of arms to the Saudis, despite the fact that they’re a brutal theocracy and the primary sponsors of the Terrorism we claim to be bombing the Middle East to stop, or bankrupt a few hundred thousand Americans to bail out your pals at the Wall Street banks that bled them dry with their Ponzi scheme, or support an Apartheid state like Israel, or sell Americans some convoluted corporate-friendly healthcare plan as if it were somehow completely impossible to provide a universal healthcare system like every other developed country, or lead the world in mass incarceration, primarily of the lower classes, who are already mass incarcerated in ghettos patrolled by militarized police, which of course bears no resemblance at all to the ghettos in Nazi-occupied Europe, and is regrettably just a permanent feature of the grown-up reality the Good Americans are utterly powerless to ever change.

This summarizes everything Hopkins has said, and validates everything that I have reflected on so far. Our government is allied with the Saudis, sponsors of the same terrorism we claim to be at war with. Strange. Americans do not often hear truths like that covered on CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC. Perhaps we should include reading more independent media like CounterPunch. Our government occupies and oppresses other people’s lands just as the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinians. The oppression happens in the United States as well. The poor are incarcerated by a militarized police, there’s a lack of funding a good educational system that teaches students to think critically, and people die due to a medical system that denies them care in any possible way combined with ridiculous costs. Worst of all, Capitalism is making corporations richer for every dead person, every loss of a home, every denial of medical care, and every student struggling to pay for college.

Hopkins concludes:

Alright, I know you’re probably thinking that sounds a lot like the rationalizations the Good Germans used to excuse themselves for not resisting the horrors of the Nazis, but it isn’t the same kind of thing at all. The Good Americans are resisting … they’re resisting Trump, who, after all, is the one responsible for all that stuff, all those wars of aggression, the CIA coups, the torture, the death squads, the ghettos, et cetera … our entire seventy-two-year history as Enforcer of global Capitalist empire and all the incalculable human suffering and irreparable damage to the planet it has caused … all that is somehow the doing of Trump and his puppet-master, Vladimir Putin. Or at least it’s not Obama’s fault, or the fault of any of his Democrat predecessors, those champions of the poor and downtrodden who never need to be resisted.

So please join the Good Americans this weekend as they do their part to help the corporatist establishment make an example of this monster (whose evil outstrips that of Hitler, and Pol Pot, and Stalin, and, well, pick your monster) and discourage any future billionaire ass hats from screwing with their simulation of democracy. They’ll be staging huge rallies all around the country to whip up support for the Pink Revolution, and possibly even all-out Blitzkrieg against our bestial Slavic enemies before they “influence” another election, or hack another rural power grid. They’re calling it the “March for Truth.” It’s a totally grassroots volunteer effort that has absolutely nothing to do with David Brock, Peter Daou, or Shareblue, or the Democratic Party, or any of its neoliberal backers. This one probably won’t quite match the Nuremberg rallies for flat-out hysteria, but give the ruling classes some time … “Resistance Summer” is just getting started.

Islamophobia or: The Demonization of a Islam and the Discrimination of All Muslims

Truthout’s BuzzFlash article describes Franklin Graham’s Islamophobia:

Franklin Graham’s latest sortie into Islamophobia occurred recently, when he vigorously opposed a decision by Duke University to allow the Adhaan, i.e. the Muslim call to prayer, to be announced from the bell tower of the campus’s Christian chapel. Graham took to Facebook to exclaim: “As Christianity is being excluded from the public square and followers of Islam are raping, butchering and beheading Christians, Jews, and anyone who doesn’t submit to their Sharia Islamic law, Duke is promoting this in the name of religious pluralism. I call on the donors and alumni to withhold their support from Duke until this policy is reversed.”

Soon after Graham’s intervention, the university reversed its decision. University officials claimed that the cancellation was based on a “credible and serious security threat.”

“Graham’s hypocrisy is glaring,” Qasim Rashid, a lawyer, speaker and author of Extremist, recently pointed out in a column at the Huffington Post.

“Here he is preventing Muslims from worshiping freely at Duke, while complaining (rightfully might I add) that Christians can’t worship freely in several Muslim majority nations. If he wants to show these despotic regimes how they should behave, he’s failed. Instead, he’s provided extremists more fodder to show how intolerant Christian leaders are. Graham mimics what he claims to hate.”

Indeed. Graham responds:

Graham later told WNCN News that while he “agree[s] with diversity … what’s happening with this country is all these religions are getting front row and Christians are being pushed — and we’re the majority — are being pushed back to the back of the room,” cnsnews.com recently reported.

That is not true. Christians are not being pushed back compared with other religions. He only feels strongly about this during the Obama Presidency, a time where constant propaganda by the most religiously extremist and conservative mainstream media recycle lies to the public on this possibility, without any evidence to prove it, that Barack Hussein Obama, given his name, is some closeted Muslim who favors Muslims over Christians.

If such false accusations were true, then the other branches of government would look into the evidence that show this President is violating the Constitution. Speaking of such a document, Franklin Graham seems extremely ignorant on what this country truly stands for. The majority has no power to receive additional privileges over other religions just because there are more of them. The Constitution is all about protecting minorities as well, which basically means respecting all people with equality, dignity and respect regardless of religion. Graham continues:

“This country was built on Christian principles, it was men and women who believed in God and believed in His Son Jesus Christ who built this country,” said Rev. Graham. “We’re the greatest nation in the history of the world. It wasn’t built by Islam, and it wasn’t built by any other group. It was those who supported and believed in the Lord Jesus Christ.”

This country may have an important history of naturally having Christians as the early settlers that originated from Europe, but that does not automatically mean this country was built on Christian principles. The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and other important documents that founded this country are written under the inspiration of a very secular and free society. If Christianity is the foundation, then we would have Jesus referenced like Mohammed is referenced in Middle Eastern nations that were built on Islamic principles. The Old and New Testament are never referenced in any of those secular documents.

Graham claims to think this is the greatest nation in the history of the world. What makes a nation great? For having the most powerful military filled with over 800 military bases outside of the United States policing and oppressing other nations with illegal occupation, the use of force, mass surveillance and bombing innocent civilians? For being the greediest and wealthiest nation on Earth where the richest 1% own and control the lives of others while half of the population is poor? If Graham ever travelled, he would know that other European nations were inspired by our Constitution, took it and started developing a higher social standard for everyone’s right to free healthcare, free education, paid leave and retirement.

Graham added, “[W]e’re the greatest nation in the history of the Earth,” he said, “and we have people today that want to destroy what we believe and what we stand for. I think the university needs to understand that the world in which we live today, we’ve been at war now 10 years against terrorists and the terrorists we’ve been fighting are people who support and believe in the Islamic faith.”

Graham needs to ask himself critical questions before opening his mouth: Why do we have people today that want to destroy us for decades? Why are we at war with terrorists? How did this problem originate? Part of answering all these questions have to do with the violent Foreign Policy of the United States. It seems to be a common response of this militarized and violent government to eliminate the enemy rather than come up with more effective and nonviolent options to suppress the expansion of terrorism. Killing terrorists and bombing other nations is only going to provide these terrorist organizations more ammunition to recruit more people who were directly affected by the terrorist activities of the United States. So, we need to stop the illegal wars and unnecessary violence. That creates more enemies, and gives more reason for nations all over the world to plan an attack on us. Part of why 9/11 happened is due to the foreign policy activities of the United States in the Middle East like their unconditional support to arm Israel with dangerous weapons.

During a 2010 televised town hall meeting, Graham called Islam “wicked” and “evil.” “They want to build as many mosques and cultural centers as they possibly can so they can convert as many Americans as they can to Islam,” Graham said on ABC’s “This Week,” politico.com reported at the time.

The hypocrisy behind such a hateful statement is that the same kinds of groups addicted to converting as many people as possible is found in all religions, not just Islam. It also exists in our hyper-militarized culture of recruiting as many young people in the military as possible through sports events like the NFL, advertising, Hollywood blockbusters and mindless first-person shooter video games like the highly popular Call of Duty franchise.

Ever since 9/11, Graham maintained his unchanged Islamophobia:

“I have not changed my opinion at all.” Viewing the activities of the Islamic State, the Taliban and Boko Haram he concluded: “This is Islam. It has not been hijacked by radicals. This is the faith, this is the religion. It is what it is. It speaks for itself.”

This is not Islam. If Graham knew or at least visited the people in the Middle East practicing Islam, he would know that the common people do not support the violence, extremism and demonization of their own faith. This religious war is really supporters of those terrorist organizations like ISIS versus those who oppose it. He should also be aware that the United States is directly and indirectly supporting terrorist organizations by arming and funding countries directly connected with them like Saudi Arabia. According to Graham’s exaggerated Islamophobic logic, the Ku Klux Klan and white suppremacists are also just practicing Christianity. If he is going to just assume the most extremist side of Islam speaks for the rest of the religion, why not Christianity? Graham concludes:

He added:

“I think it is very important that we do all that we can to try to share God’s love with Muslims because they have no hope outside of dying in Jihad. I want them to know, you do not have to die for God. God died for us. He sent His Son to die for us. We do not have to kill ourselves to please God. I want them to know that they can have eternal life.”

Franklin Graham is a pot-stirring opportunist. To score political points with his conservative Christian followers, he has lambasted President Obama on numerous occasions, including questioning the President’s faith and the country of his birth. Therefore, it is not surprising that when an opportunity presented itself at Duke University, “Graham’s Facebook fulminations,” as Religion News Service’s Aaron Griffith recently pointed out, “transformed what could have been a nuanced campus debate about religious establishment, sacred space, and pluralism into a countrywide fracas that calls to mind 1980s culture wars.”

I would like to add that Franklin Graham tries to normalize his hate speech filled with Islamophobia with sharing God’s love with Muslims. He seems to be under the impression that Muslims having to suicide bomb themselves is one of many ways he thinks Muslims do to die for God. Graham also tries to convert them, because it is part of his job as a Christian to preach the so-called truth to them. To save them. From what? Eternal torture? What a sophisticated way to control and suppress people’s potential through fear of a celestial dictator.

More coming soon as I provide a critical, self-reflective evaluation of other sources of Islamophobia from refugees to border patrol discrimination.

The Connection Between the Origin of ISIS and the United States of America’s Globalists

Looking throughout the decades past in the United States starting with the Reagan administration, one might see a clear pattern of the most current problems faced across the world like climate change, the invasion of other countries, and terrorism. This article demonstrates part of this connection:

The mainstream media are covering up the fact that Hillary Clinton admitted in public that the U.S. government created both ISIS and Al Qaeda.

A common problem with citizens watching mainstream media is the lack of diversified perspectives on things. It represents corporations full of biased journalism like Fox News. The exposure of truth in such outlets are very poor. Later, you will see that international outlets have a different and more accurate perspective on reality than the reality-TV inspired and Hollywoodized pop culture of a fictitious (or fabricated), simplified worldview full of the manufacturing of stereotypes and labeling the good guys versus the bad guys. Of course, we always place ourselves highly as the leading influence on world peace while murdering innocent lives and humanitarian leaders (a threat to the global spread of Corporate Capitalism) in Panama, Iraq, Syria, and Libya.

Why are most mainstream media outlets refusing to tell the public that the U.S. has never actively fought ISIS, but has instead supported them secretly in the Middle East?

This is a good question that leads closer to the truth. It is precisely that reason the United States is not actively fighting ISIS in comparison to King Abdullah, leader of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, who ordered a massive airstrike on ISIS. The citizens of the United States that heard of this news (mostly Arab-Americans) look at the King of Jordan as an inspiring leader, and then came the legitimate social media criticisms of President Obama and comparisons between the two leaders.

The most vital thing American citizens are ignorant of (blaming Obama for everything) is the fact that the United States supported and used organizations like ISIS through CIA training:

It is a sad reality that if one wants to get accurate news reporting, one must mostly bypass the U.S. propaganda media and look to sources outside the U.S. Here is a Canadian publication that covered the Hillary admission:

“The following video features Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton acknowledging that America created and funded Al Qaeda as a terrorist organization in the heyday of the Soviet-Afghan war:

“‘Let’s remember here… the people we are fighting today we funded them twenty years ago.

“‘Let’s go recruit these mujahideen.

“‘And great, let them come from Saudi Arabia and other countries, importing their Wahabi brand of Islam so that we can go beat the Soviet Union.’”

“What she does not mention is that at no time in the course of the last 35 years has the US ceased to support and finance Al Qaeda as a means to destabilizing sovereign countries. It was ‘a pretty good idea’, says Hillary, and it remains a good idea today:

“Amply documented, the ISIS and Al Nusrah Mujahideen are recruited by NATO and the Turkish High command, with the support of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel.

True. Alternative media can be found outside or within the United States that preach truth towards a corrupt system of ideologies.

“The Global War on Terror (GWOT) is led by the United States. It is not directed against Al Qaeda.

“Quite the opposite: The ‘Global War on Terrorism’ uses Al Qaeda terrorist operatives as their foot soldiers.

“‘Political Islam’ and the imposition of an ‘Islamic State’ (modeled on Qatar or Saudi Arabia) is an integral part of US foreign policy.”

The report further states:

“It is a means to destabilizing sovereign countries and imposing ‘regime change’.

Libya is an example.

Think it through, folks: the U.S. government creates the radical Islamic terror networks that justify America’s “Global War On Terror” which directly results in millions of refugees (and no doubt plants terrorists among them) flooding Europe.

Thus, the manufacturing of stereotypes in Hollywood cinema. The United States is doing a pretty good job at labelling people from other cultures not American as the bad guys or inferior.

Here is how the same Canadian publication covers this part of the story:

“A newly-released Hillary Clinton email confirmed that the Obama administration has deliberately provoked the civil war in Syria as the ‘best way to help Israel.’

“In an indication of her murderous and psychopathic nature, Clinton also wrote that it was the ‘right thing’ to personally threaten Bashar Assad’s family with death.

“In the email, released by Wikileaks, then Secretary of State Clinton says that the ‘best way to help Israel’ is to ‘use force’ in Syria to overthrow the government.”

Very disturbing. America’s unconditional daily funding of millions of dollars to Israel lead to an illegal act that actually broke international law. In addition, the Syrian ruler is not as bad of a leader the United States make him out to be:

“The email proves–as if any more proof was needed–that the US government has been the main sponsor of the growth of terrorism in the Middle East, and all in order to ‘protect’ Israel.

“It is also a sobering thought to consider that the ‘refugee’ crisis which currently threatens to destroy Europe, was directly sparked off by this US government action as well, insofar as there are any genuine refugees fleeing the civil war in Syria.

This is precisely what Assad has been trying to clarify with constantly to the United States regarding this so-called Civil War in Syria. He clarifies with his complex thinking (proving he has a clearer perspective on reality) that the conflict in Syria bridges back to the terrorist organizations that started since decades ago.

The truth is, Hillary (and the rest of the grubby gaggle of Neocons) doesn’t give a tinker’s dam about Israel. Neocons such as Hillary Clinton simply use Israel (and the misguided passions of Christians and conservatives who blindly support Israel) as cover to accomplish their real agenda: manipulating world governments to the enrichment and empowerment of themselves.

This is the reason why the United States has been invading and destroying countries. Part of the reason for the Iraq war is due to oil resources. In other words, corporations of oil had influencial political power to make this happen. A visual and accurate representation (in cinematic form) can be found in Stephen Gaghan’s Syriana.

That’s what Neocons do: they foment war. To their very soul, they are warmongers. And never forget that Hillary Clinton is a true-blue Neocon. Or if the word “Neoliberal” sounds better to you in describing Hillary, so be it. They both mean the same thing: WAR.

There really is not much of a difference between voting Democrat or Republican. Both parties have similar goals to wage war, and make a lot of money.

On the whole, Neocons and Neolibs are people without conscience. At their core, they have no allegiance to the United States or any other country. They are globalists. The only god they serve is the god of power and wealth, and they don’t care how many people–including Americans–they kill to achieve it. The blood of millions of dead victims around the world is already dripping from their murderous hands.

Those globalists have no respect for the original intent of this great country that inspired other civilized countries to do more humanitarian acts ahead of us like free healthcare, paid leave and vacations, and so much more. That document the globalists disrespect is known as the Constitution of the United States of America.

The article ends with the following:

And if you think my indictment against the Neocons is an exaggeration, Paul Craig Roberts (Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President Ronald Reagan) was even more scathing in his condemnation of them:

“The remaining danger is the crazed American neoconservatives. I know many of them. They are completely insane ideologues. This inhuman filth has controlled the foreign policy of every US government since Clinton’s second term. They are a danger to all life on earth. Look at the destruction they have wreaked in the former Yugoslavia, in Ukraine, in Georgia and South Ossetia, in Africa, in Afghanistan and the Middle East. The American people were too brainwashed by lies and by political impotence to do anything about it, and Washington’s vassals in Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan had to pretend that this policy of international murder was ‘bringing freedom and democracy.’

“The crazed filth that controls US foreign policy is capable of defending US hegemony with nuclear weapons. The neoconservatives must be removed from power, arrested, and put on international trial for their horrendous war crimes before they defend their hegemony with Armageddon.

“Neoconservatives and their allies in the military/security complex make audacious use of false flag attacks. These evil people are capable of orchestrating a false flag attack that propels the US and Russia to war.”

This is true. The American people are not only brainwashed by their unconditional allegiance to the corporate system (contradictory to Constitutional values), but are ignorant of everything else on an international level. They are enslaved to similified ideologies manufactured by mainstream media that only promote two sides. One side is good. The other side is either a conspiracy theorist, a terrorist, a socialist, a liberal, a feminist, and any other labels that really are not as bad as what they make it out to be. Just as leaders like Assad, Castro, and Ahmadinejad are not as bad as the mainstream media make them out to be.

We are not spreading freedom and democracy around the world. Michael Moore’s popular documentary on 9/11 also covered the Iraq war, which depicted a very upset Arabic woman screaming and crying after losing so much shelter and lives from family and friends due to the violent actions of the United States.
